China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.39 billion. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party of China, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); while claiming sovereignty over Taiwan. Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometres, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area. Until Qin Shi Huang became the first emperor around 220 BC and unified China under a centralised system, there was no such thing as a Chinese national architecture. Under Qin Shi Huang’s rule large and impressively decorated structures were built. This period saw the beginnings of what would later become the Great Wall. It is from the Tang and Song dynasties that the first surviving structures appear. Buildings were painted in bright colours, with great attention to detail. When the Mongols ousted the Song in the late 13th century they contributed little of their own culture to architecture, instead choosing to imitate and rebuild the style of the Chinese.
Běijīng was the long-standing capital during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Forbidden City showcases the architecture of the time. In it we can see the epitome of traditional Chinese architectural ideas of monumentality and symmetry, with strong use of colour and decoration.

Air Freight
In 2014 China has 188 airports. Of China's major airports, Beijing International Airport (PEK), located Northeast of central Beijing, has the greatest flow of freight and passenger numbers annually. Shanghai has the 2nd largest amount of air traffic in China through its two airports combined, the Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), located Southeast of central Shanghai, and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), which is located west of central Shanghai. The new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), was opened in 2004 and is located 28 km from downtown Guangzhou.
Other major airports are located at Chengdu, Chongding, Dalian, Hangzhou, Harbin, Hohkot, Kunming, Qingdao, Shenyang, Tianjin, Urumqi, Xiamen, and Xian. China is served both by numerous major international flights to most countries of the world and a host of domestic regional airlines. Air traffic within mainland China is often connected through Beijung, Shanghai or Guangzhou. Flights between mainland China and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Macao International Airport (MFM) are considered international. A new airport was built at Nagqu, Tibet and surpassed Qamdo Bangda airport as being the world's highest airport. China is also currently in the process of constructing the new Beijing Daxing International airport, which is scheduled to be completed and operational this year (2015). It will become the country's biggest airport with nine runways and it will become the Worlds busiest airport by international passenger standards, surpassing the UK’s London Heathrow airport and will have more passenger numbers than Atlanta - which is currently the world's busiest airport.

Sea Freight
In 2014 China has 314 sea ports in 32 provinces, 130 of which are open to foreign ships. The major ports, including river ports accessible by ocean going ships, are Beihai, Dalian, Dandong, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Haikou, Huangpu, Jiujiang, Lianyungang, Nanjing, Nantong, Ningbo, Qingdao, Qinhuangdao, Rizhao, Sanya, Shanghai, Shantou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Weihai, Wenzhou, Xiamen, Xingang, Yangzhou, Yantai and Zhanjiang. China has sixteen "major" shipping ports with a capacity of over 50 million tons per year. The seven largest port terminals are Dalian, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Qingdao, Qinhuangdao, Shanghai. Additionally, Hong Kong is a major international port serving as an important trade centre for China. In 2005 it was reported that Shanghai port became the world's largest cargo port, processing cargo topping 443 million tons and surpassing Singapore’s port.
